Mt. Lebanon Senior Men's Golf Club

This is the official website of the Mt. Lebanon Senior Men's Golf Club. Membership is open to all men age 55 or older, residents of Mt. Lebanon as well as non-residents.

This site will inform you about our season’s schedule of weekly events and tournaments, our once a month away outings and picnic, and a form with information on contacting us about joining our group.

2024 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

In 2024, the Mt. Lebanon Senior Men's Golf Club celebrates its 60th anniversary at the historic Mt. Lebanon golf course – a true milestone!  Since its founding in 1964, the club has successfully enabled senior men to play golf and develop friendships while playing this challenging sport.  When I reflect on our past, I am thankful for all the club officers who invested their time and effort to bring us to this point.  As president, I, along with the other current club officers and committee chairs, are committed to continuing this tradition and are working hard to make 2024 a fun golfing year for you, our members.

We will open the season with two icebreakers; one at Topgolf in early March and the second at the course in late March

A Kick-Off dinner is scheduled just prior to the start of the season and the end of the season awards dinner is scheduled in October.

In terms of the Wednesday events at the course, in addition to our traditional skill events, we will be adding a new two-man best ball event, proposed by past president Mike Wallen (see p12).  We are continuing the mixer-scrambles to promote interaction among members (see p11).

Match play competition will occur again this year – a challenging, but fun event.

The away events will include many of our favorites. The first event will be on April 22 at the traditional course - Chippewa.  Other sites include Cedarbrook, Quicksilver, Rolling Acres, and The Madison Club.  As with recent years, the club will provide snacks and a nonalcoholic beverage at the turn at away events.

The picnic will again be at Butler's Lakeside course, as a scramble event.

We will continue to rely on our members-only web site (golfleague.us) for schedules, member contact information, communications, and for tee time sign-ups.

So, we encourage you to participate in all events and to get to know other members.  Also, please be sure to invite friends and neighbors who love golf to join us as members.

Have a fun year !

Mt. Lebanon Golf Course

A Proud Tradition
Mt. Lebanon's proud tradition of golf dates back to July 4, 1907, when a group of 30 men founded the Castle Shannon Golf Club on a 100-acre farm and persisted with the sport despite having to dodge moving targets, such as cows and horses.

There were no tees or greens; still 30 golfers soon had joined, each paying $5 dues per year and bringing along scythes and lawn mowers to keep the course in playable condition. By 1918, there were 100 members, some rudimentary tees and greens and even a groundskeeper. That original club eventually disbanded, was reorganized, and in the '20s, '30s and '40s was one of the most popular 9-hole courses in the Pittsburgh area.

Among the club's elite members were the financiers Andrew W., and Richard King Mellon, who reportedly rode the trolley to the end of the Castle Shannon line and were transported by horse-drawn carriage to the golf course. Mt. Lebanon purchased the private course in 1947 and reconfigured several holes located in the adjacent Castle Shannon Borough so that the entire course now lies within the boundaries of Mt. Lebanon.

Today the golf course is recognized as the oldest municipal in Pennsylvania.  It is now 115 years young !!!!
